DESCO Three Light Commercial Diving Helmet - Heavyweight
Before WWII DESCO was founded as a research and development company for deep diving. In 1939 the project to dive on the RMS Lusitania was cancelled and the company began selling a self contained rebreather for commercial and military work. DESCO did not build standard helmets at the time. The war broguht DESCO into that market and the company became the largest maker of Mark V diving helmets in the period. As the war was coming to a close the company was looking forward to the post war marketplace. In 1944 DESCO began creating a line of commercial diving helmets to compete with Morse and Schrader helmets. We designed a series of lightweight helmets based on the Greek Sponge helmet. DESCO also chose to build a competing helmet to the successful Morse Heavyweight Commercial Helmet. Morse had been building this model helmet since the 1850s.
The DESCO Commercial Helmet uses the same breastplate shape as the Morse Helmet. This made either brand of helmet compatable with the commercial dress. From a distance the helmets look the same but brails and the faceplate are not interchangeable.
The standard finish is tin plated but the commercial diving helmet can be ordered polished as pictured above ($250.00 additional).
The spitcock and communications are optional. Breastplate will fit dresses with a Morse type commercial collar only.
